God Is Calling Me to Write This Book: A Tug You Can’t Ignore

“This might sound strange, but God is calling me to write this book,” a client wrote in my intake form.

I smiled. Not strange at all. I hear it pretty often from writers, non-writers, ministry leaders, therapists, and coaches.

You can’t shake it. The thought of writing a book keeps coming back, stirring something deep in you. Maybe it started as a whisper—an idea that won’t let go—or a growing conviction that your story or message needs to be shared. You may or may not be ready to say it aloud, but certainty grows within you: God told me to write this book.

If so, what does that mean? Does it guarantee the process will be easy? That the book will be wildly successful? That you’ll know exactly what to say?

Not necessarily. But if you feel drawn to write or create, I want to encourage you: It’s worth paying attention to that divine tug.

Let’s talk about what this calling might look like, some common misconceptions that can trip you up, and why writing a book may be about more than just the final product.

When You Feel Led to Write, Listen

One of the most beautiful ways God speaks is through desires He plants within us—the ones that stir our hearts toward something good, true, and meaningful.

If the idea of writing a book keeps resurfacing, don’t dismiss it. Maybe you’ve been through something that could encourage others. Maybe you’ve gained wisdom that could help someone else’s journey. Maybe you just love the idea of putting words together, of crafting something beautiful and inspiring.

Whatever the case, the fact that you’re here, pondering God is calling me to write this book, means it’s worth exploring.

How Do You Know if God Is Calling You to Write a Book?

People experience this calling in different ways. Some have a clear, defining moment when they know they’re supposed to write. Others feel a gradual, persistent tug. You might resonate with one (or more) of these:

  • You see writing or creating as stewardship. You have a gift—whether it’s storytelling, teaching, or simply expressing thoughts clearly. And using that gift to serve others feels like a way to honor God, offering back what He’s placed in you.
  • You simply love creating. Sometimes, it’s not about profound productivity. It’s about the joy of the process—of discovering something new in yourself, of stringing words together in a way that makes you come alive. Maybe this isn’t about a polished end result, but about how God delights in watching His child create.
  • You want to change lives with your message of hope. You have a transformative story or method that has already been helping people. Writing a book could mean you have a way to reach more people with your message.
  • You want to leave a legacy. You feel called to write something your children or future generations can hold in their hands—a story, a testimony, or a collection of wisdom they can carry with them.

If you’re realizing God is calling me to write this book, know that you’re not imagining things. Creating a book can be powerful and meaningful, even if you’re not sure where it’s leading.

Is Writing a Book Worth It? Common Misconceptions

This is where many writers get stuck. If God is calling you to write a book, shouldn’t it be easy and quick? Shouldn’t doors swing wide open? Shouldn’t success be guaranteed?

Not necessarily. Many well-meaning, faith-driven writers assume things like:

  • “If God called me to this, the words will flow effortlessly.” (Truth: Writing takes effort and time. Even the best writers wrestle with self-doubt and blank pages.)
  • “Since this message is important, people will automatically find and read my book.” (Truth: Even the most powerful books need intentionality in writing, publishing, and reaching readers.)
  • “I don’t need to learn about writing or marketing—God will handle it.” (Truth: Stewardship in managing what God has entrusted to you also means growing in skill, connections, and wisdom.)

So, is writing a book worth it if it’s not an instant success? Absolutely—if you see it as more than just an outcome.

Writing as a Journey of Faith and Transformation

Here’s the part we don’t always expect: Writing a book isn’t just about the book.

It’s about who you become in the process.

It’s about trusting God when you feel uncertain.
Persevering when the words don’t come easily.
Letting go of perfectionism and fear.
Reinterpreting impostor syndrome.
Opening yourself to new relationships and habits.
Learning to sit with your thoughts, your story, your message—letting it refine you before you offer it to others.

If you’re sensing God calling me to write this book—trust that God isn’t just interested in what you produce. He’s invested in what this journey is doing in you. He’s eager for the opportunity for you to trust Him more and deepen your relationship with Him.
