Why Are Decisions So Hard? What To Do When Stuck at a Crossroads

I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, journal open in my lap, heart tangled in knots. I was stuck between two very real paths: one that looked “safe” and predictable—and one that felt like a whisper from God.

Both were good. Neither felt certain.

And I couldn’t move.

If you’ve ever wondered why decisions are so hard—especially when it involves your calling, creativity, or a God-sized dream—you’re not alone. Whether you’re navigating a business pivot, choosing a niche, considering a career change, or exploring a dream God planted long ago, the decision-making process can feel confusing and emotionally exhausting.

Sometimes, no matter how many pep talks or productivity hacks we try, our souls still crave clarity.

Why Are Decisions So Hard? The Real Reason You Feel Stuck

When we’re standing at a crossroads, the pressure to “figure it out” can be overwhelming. For many of the Christian creatives and entrepreneurs I’ve met who want to honor God with their choices, the stakes feel even higher.

We hear advice like:

  • “Just make a decision!”
  • “Clarity comes through action!”
  • “Set a SMART goal and go for it!”

But inside, we’re still wondering:

  • What if I pick the wrong thing?
  • What if this isn’t what God wants?
  • What if I’m just scared, and that’s what’s holding me back?

We even attach feeling stuck to our identity, asking, “Why am I so indecisive?” Then overthinking and creeps in—where your thoughts cycle endlessly around what-ifs, emotions get tangled, and the mental fog thickens.

So what if I knew why decisions were hard? I was still stuck, and I needed a gentle way forward.

I Needed a Framework That Held Both My Faith and My Fear

I didn’t want to stay stuck on the fence forever—but I also knew I couldn’t force myself off of it. I needed more than a quick decision-making hack. I wanted something that honored how God was forming me in the process.

So I started paying attention.

I journaled through past decisions. I noticed patterns in what helped me gain peace and clarity. I mined blogs and books for different ways people discerned direction. And slowly, a process began to emerge—a simple, grace-filled map that helped me untangle the overwhelm and walk forward with courage.

The Dare to Decide Map

A Framework for Faith-Fueled Clarity at Life’s Crossroads

Here’s what I discovered:

1. Accept You’re at a Crossroads

Pause and acknowledge where you are and how you got here. This is holy ground—not something to rush past.

2. Choose Your Character

What kind of person do you want to be in this next chapter? What inner conflicts or desires are surfacing?

3. Set Your Compass

Take inventory of your identity, values, experiences, passions, and God-given strengths. These are clues for what direction aligns with your purpose.

4. Prepare for the Journey

Look at what resources you already have—support, time, energy, wisdom—and what you might need to gather.

5. Make the Decision and Take One Next Step

Trust that you don’t need to see the whole path—just the next faithful step. You can always course-correct with God as you go.

This Is for One Who Feels Called… but Caught in the Fog

If you’re a writer, entrepreneur, ministry leader—or a wholehearted creative who knows there’s something God is asking you to step into—but you don’t know why this decision so hard or how to decide

You are not behind.
You are not doing it wrong.
You are just in the middle of becoming.

And it’s okay to need space to process.
